When people think of Barossa Valley wineries, they often picture century-old stone buildings and multi-generational family dynasties. And while those traditions are part of what makes the Barossa special, there's another story - one of modern winemaking, innovation, and a fresh approach to an ancient craft.
First Drop Wines is that story. Founded in 2004 in the Barossa Valley, First Drop has spent over two decades crafting vibrant, modern expressions of Australian wine that challenge expectations while honouring the region's winemaking heritage.
What Does "Modern" Mean in Barossa Winemaking?
In the Barossa, "modern" doesn't mean abandoning tradition. It means approaching winemaking with a focus on drinkability, diversity, and expressing the unique character of each vineyard site. For First Drop, that means:
Minimal intervention winemaking. We let the fruit speak for itself. Each wine is crafted to be the best expression of its varietal and regional character, without heavy-handed techniques that mask the fruit's natural qualities.
Multi-regional sourcing. While we're proudly based in the Barossa Valley, we source fruit from some of South Australia's most distinguished regions - the Barossa Valley, Eden Valley, Adelaide Hills, and McLaren Vale. This gives our range remarkable diversity, from bold Barossa Shiraz to crisp Adelaide Hills whites.
A philosophy of fun. First Drop was founded with a desire to make wines that are enjoyed, not just admired. We brought personality and humour to an industry that sometimes took itself too seriously - and the wine world responded. We won the inaugural Young Gun of Wine award, recognition that celebrated a new generation of winemakers doing things differently.
The Home of the Brave
Our cellar door - the Home of the Brave - is housed within a striking 1930s-built distillery on the Provenance Barossa Precinct. It's a space that embodies the First Drop ethos: heritage meets modern, tradition meets innovation, and good wines meet good times.
The cellar door offers one of the broadest tasting experiences in the Barossa, with guided tastings, Shiraz Masterclasses, food and wine matching sessions, and seasonal tapas dining. It's a cool, relaxed space where you can explore the diversity of South Australian wine without leaving your seat.
Awards That Speak for Themselves
Modern doesn't mean compromising on quality. First Drop Wines is a James Halliday 5 Red Star winery - one of Australia's highest winery ratings. We've been named among The Real Review's Top Wineries of Australia 2025, and our Mother's Milk Barossa Shiraz has been awarded Wine Spectator's Critics' Choice five times and named to its Top 100 Wines of the World in 2020 and 2021.
These aren't just participation trophies. They're recognition from the world's most respected wine authorities that modern Barossa winemaking can produce wines that stand alongside the best in the world.
